In other words, for the entry-level or casual backpacker, these recommendations aren’t just the cheapest options—in most cases, they’re the best. And a word of caution before you go looking for even more affordable items: don’t buy low-quality gear. Backpacking gear is an investment, it’s important that it works well (no one likes a leaky tent), and the longer it lasts, the more junk will stay out of our landfills.
